Do Muslims and Christians Worship the Same God? [9781789742299]

Are Islam and Christianity essentially the same? Is the way to overcome divisions in our world to accept that Muslims and Christians are all part of one family of Abrahamic faith?

Dr Andy Bannister shares how his journey from the multicultural streets of inner-city London to being a Christian with a PhD in Qur'anic Studies led him to discover along the way that far from being the same, Islam and Christianity are profoundly and utterly different.

Do Muslims and Christians Worship the Same God? gets to the heart of what the world's two largest religions say about life's biggest questions - and shows the uniqueness of Christianity's answer not merely to the question of whether God exists, but of who God really is.

PREACH REVIEW:

It took until over halfway through the book for me to pinpoint what the purpose of the book is. The book is part academic, part theological, part autobiographical, as well as a ‘compare and contrast’ examination of Christianity and Islam.

The author is a director of the Solas Centre for Public Christianity. His PhD is in Islamic Studies and therefore he is in a good position to compare and contrast the concept of God from both the biblical and the Qu’ranic perspectives.

The text is interspersed with quotes from the Bible and the Qu’ran to illustrate the points he is making, and there is also a sprinkling of personal anecdotes which help explain his perspective. The story of his knee sprain and the asymptomatic cancer of his friend (page 103/4) is a truly wonderful illustration of the different ways in which people view what is wrong.

There is a major emphasis around the way in which the Bible and the Qu’ran treat the story of the events surrounding the Garden of Eden and the concept of ‘sin’.

The book explains the differences between the way the Qu’ranic interpretation is of God as Master/Servant whereas Christianity interprets the relationship as Father/Child. He goes into great detail about what the Bible and the Qu’ran offer the readers concerning what God gives to followers, e.g. the Bible – rescue and forgiveness, and the Qu’ran – guidance.

Each chapter ends with a very helpful summary in the form of key takeaways. The book is relatively easy reading, in simple language, and useful in helping Christians and Muslims understand the differences between the concepts of God held by both parties. However, the book would be enhanced if some of the similarities were expounded as well. From personal experience, I am aware of some of the differences and the similarities. It would also be helpful if some weighting to the various views was given to help explain the context of some of the areas of conflict.

Overall, the book is a useful tool for anyone wishing to learn more about Islam, and for preachers there are novel illustrations to help explain some biblical concepts.

Review by Alan Rashleigh for Preach magazine issue 28 Grief and Lament.

AUTHOR: Andy is the Director of the Solas Centre for Public Christianity, an evangelism and training ministry based in Scotland. He is passionate about getting the gospel out of the four walls of the Church (and into places like coffee shops, universities, schools, pubs and so on). He also loves equipping Christians to share their faith at work or among their friends. As well as his busy itinerant role with Solas, he is also an Adjunct Speaker for RZIM. For six years (2010-2016) he was their Canadian Director and enjoyed criss-crossing Canada and North America engaging people of all faiths and none with the gospel. Before RZIM, he did his theological study through London School of Theology (then London Bible College), doing first a BA in Theology and then a PhD in Qur'anic Studies. He got involved in evangelism through preaching to Muslims at Speakers' Corner in London's Hyde Park, and so wanted to dig really deeply into understanding Islam so he could engage his Muslim friends well.
