Here is a collection of brilliant and poignant parables and stories, for personal reading and public use. Each offers a penetrating insight into some aspect of the human condition. They include:

- The Spider Who Believed in Himself: a cautionary tale for millennials.
- An Artist Tries to Create the World: she tries and tries again . . . but she still can’t get it right.
- The Divine Call Centre: ‘Your call is important to God. Please don’t hang up.’
- An Atheist Troubled by His Doubts: he just wishes that he had the simple faith of other atheists

PREACH REVIEW:

Yours Truly is a collection of eighteen short stories and parables by Murray Watts, an established author and director. Murray has written screenplays for TV and film as well as plays for radio and theatre, arguably most notably for Riding Lights, the York-based company he co-founded.

Ten of the stories were written specially for the book, with the rest penned previously. Some useful information about how and why the stories came to be can be found in the Introduction and Murray generously grants permission for them to be read to non-paying audiences, such as in churches and schools. These insightful stories would indeed be of value to those leading worship and small study groups as well as to individuals. To this end, some readers might have found it useful to have an occasional cross-reference to a Bible passage.

Some of the stories are a re-telling of episodes from the Bible in the context of life today; others are original stories also containing biblical truths. Both amply serve to illustrate the power of the narrative genre by raising the relevance of scripture today and by acting as an aid to its understanding. Sometimes surprising, sometimes humorous, the stories are always accessible, clever and wise. Throughout, Murray’s writing is entertaining and engaging, thought-provoking and gently challenging.

The stories shed light on aspects of the modern human condition, such as an unhealthy emphasis on celebrity, perfectionism, family relationships, pride and judgment, and personal happiness. At the same time they illuminate with spiritual truths those aspects of a truly fulfilled life that should claim our focus: humility, thankfulness, compassion, kindness, forgiveness and Jesus himself. With these underlying themes of denying ourselves and following Jesus, the book could be one for studying during Lent.

Review by David Grimley for Preach magazine, issue 28, Grief and Lament
