Jeremiah lived in times of national crisis, which for him became personal. In Ian Shaw’s book we follow Jeremiah from when he was called as a young man. We see what this cost him, and how he felt about the message he had to give. We trace the effects of his ministry, and how Jeremiah, by his actions, demonstrated that he believed God’s Word and his promises. We watch and hear as Jeremiah buys a field no sensible person would want. We also meet some unknown spiritual heroes as well as a book-burning ruler. Ian Shaw’s book is neither an exposition of Jeremiah, nor a summary of the theology of the book. Rather, we come to know Jeremiah as a person, and how he acts, speaks and lives as he persists in trusting God through testing and perplexing crises for himself and his people. We learn how we might do the same.
