Historically, evangelicals have made many constructive contributions to the transformation of society. During the nineteenth century, William Wilberforce, Lord Shaftesbury and others established evangelicalism as a major reforming movement and their legacy lives on in a host of modern-day evangelical campaigns and societies. Evangelicals themselves, however, have often differed on the theology and strategy of social transformation.
